Free Antivirus Software

Do you have antivirus software?

I’ve gone without using antivirus software for several years now. This is mainly due to my extensive use of zone alarm’s free firewall. I’ve always said that with a good firewall and proper ActiveX settings inside your browser and email client that most viruses are pretty easily avoided. For the past couple of weeks however, I’ve been having to disable my firewall under certain circumstances while working. Since I’ve used a firewall for so long I was really worried that just a little bit of time without my firewall being enabled would open up some pretty big holes and allow the dreaded viruses to make their way on the my computer. So, for the first time I decided to look into antivirus software and what was available on the market. Of course, if you know me very well the first thing I’m doing is looking for some kind of freeware. And of course, if you know much about the antivirus software market and how much money is made selling such software you probably thought as I did that I would have no luck finding freeware antivirus software. If that’s what you thought, you were wrong but don’t worry because so was I! Thankfully, there is indeed a free of charge antivirus software available for home personal use. I’m not sure how good this antivirus software stands up to the big names such as Norton and McAfee , but after quick installation and a scan of my computer the software did indeed discover that a couple of viruses had made their way on my hard drive . The free antivirus software cleaned them up and I’m glad I didn’t have to pay for it!

  1. Yea AVG is a pretty good anti virus program, IMHO i think it beats the crap out of norton or mcafee. AVG is not that much of a memory hogger. So my experience with it has been pretty good. I am using it right now as we speak and haven’t had any problems with it so far. Everyone else should check it out..

  2. AVG is great! I’ve been using it for about 3 or 4 years now since my buddy Jake introduced me to it.

I agree it beats the hell out of McAfee and Norton. And did you mention it’s F*R*E*E? I have never had a problem with viruses, so it must do a good job.

It really doesn’t hog any resources either. I’m a big gammer so that is a pretty important part to me. I hate having to go kill all these running programs before playing a game, with AVG, I don’t have to.

It offers basically all the same features that the others offer, as far as real time scanning and email scanning (prob the most important).

    AVG’s got my vote!

  3. wow and all this time u guys have been using it… go figure! well, like i’ve said i’ve never needed an antivirus program before. glad to know that it’s not junk too.

  4. so 04… haha

well at least zonealarm can boast some serious protection… cause I’ve seriously never needed antivirus software until i was cornered into needing to disable my firewall from time to time. if i had to i’d rather pay zonelabs than norton or mcafee… thank goodness i have to do neither!

  5. Yeah, I’ve been using AVG for several years now too. Sometimes it detects threats the big boys miss. And as far as not needing an antivirus program. . .it’s like insurance. . .you (hopefully) don’t need it 99% of the time, it’s that 1% of the time that if you don’t have it, you REALLY wish you had. I make it a point to have both a firewall and an antivirus, just in case something slips through, or I download something I shouldn’t have.

  6. well with AVG it’s like having free insureance! 😀

so in that case it’s definitely worth having. after all the positive comments, “it’s not a resource hog”, “it catches viruses that the big boys miss”, “it’s been around a while” and “ITS FREE” knowing about it and not having it just doesn’t seem to make much sense.
